Dylan looks to book his ticket to Melbourne

It is no longer called an Arc Trial but it is a Melbourne Cup one for Dylan Mouth, whose credentials for Flemington rather than Chantilly will be put to the test.

Victory in Haydock's Old Newton Cup sparked Melbourne Cup plans and trainer Marco Botti is hoping the six-year-old can show he deserves his place on the flight.

The trainer said: "The plan is that if all goes well he'll go for the Melbourne Cup. But he'll need to run a good race here first. I think he needs to finish in the first three to tell us he'll have a live chance in Australia.

"We were pleased with him after his win in the Old Newton Cup. He's a typical older horse who just does enough at home. I've no worries about the shorter trip."

Mosse out to end week on a high

There's nothing like a winner to lift you after a testing week and that is what Gerald Mosse will be hoping for when he climbs aboard Secret Number for Saeed bin Suroor.

Less than four months after joining the big-spending Phoenix Thoroughbreds the 50-year-old learned this week his services were no longer required.

The Arc-winning jockey rode three winners from eight mounts for the organisation and gets an immediate chance to show what they might be missing on Secret Number, winner of the Bosphorus Cup under Mosse in Turkey this month.

Secret Number carries a 5lb penalty for that Group 2 win but Suroor said: "He won nicely on what was his first start of this season in Turkey and came out of that race in good form.

"The track at Newbury and the quicker ground will suit him. He's ready to go again and I’m hoping for another good run."

Second seeks to keep stepping up

Decorated Knight's Irish Champion Stakes has made 2017 a memorable year for Roger Charlton, who has also taken plenty of pleasure from the return to form of Second Step.

The six-year-old seems to have thrived for the move to Beckhampton Stables. His Listed win at Windsor was his second success in five starts for the trainer, the other being a half-length verdict over Desert Encounter, who re-opposes here.

Second Step's Glorious Goodwood second behind subsequent Irish Champions Stakes runner-up Poet's Word looks a particularly good piece of form for a horse who won a Group 1 in Germany when with Luca Cumani a couple of seasons ago.

Charlton said: "I think he's been performing within a few pounds of his best level as a younger horse, so we're pleased with him.

"He's had a good season and been very consistent. This is more competitive as it's slightly up in grade but his last performance at Windsor was a good one and the track and everything should suit him."

Michael Bell, trainer of Fabricate
The penalty for his win at Windsor will make life tougher but he's done very well since then and conditions will be perfect. He seems to have really got his act together for dropping back in trip.

David Simcock, trainer of Desert Encounter
He's in good order after a short break and this should be more realistic than the King George. We've won it for the last two years and it would be great to do it again.

Clive Cox, trainer of My Dream Boat
This is step down – he's been competing in the highest division for much of this season after winning his Group 1 at Royal Ascot last year. But he's in good shape and I am hopeful he can give a very good showing.

Eve Johnson Houghton, trainer of Scarlet Dragon and What About Carlo
Scarlet Dragon is in really good form and just got done on the line at Kempton, so we're hopeful. What About Carlo adores Newbury and the bit of rain forecast overnight will help. As long as it's not too quick he'll run.
