It promises to be a weekend of sensational sport, with the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe the highlight at Longchamp on Sunday, but before then there is plenty to enjoy.

Undoubtedly today's highlight will be at Newmarket, where Laurens will bid for a fifth Group 1 of her sparkling career in the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (3.15).

Ascot's final Flat card before Champions Day features a heritage handicap, the Challenge Cup (3.35), and Redcar hosts its biggest day of the season, where the valuable Two-Year-Old Trophy (2.45) is the main prize.

There is jumps action at Fontwell and also Gowran Park, where Ryanair Chase hero Balko Des Flos makes his seasonal reappearance in the PWC Champion Chase (3.40).

Plenty of eyes will be on the opening day at Longchamp, particularly to observe the previously troublesome ground. But not to be forgotten, Wolverhampton once again plays the solo role in the evening to help carry us into Arc Sunday.

Final thought

Last year's first and second in the Challenge Cup, Accidental Agent and Lord Glitters, finished first and second in the Queen Anne Stakes earlier this season. It may be an extreme example, but Ascot handicap form is always worth following.
