Salisbury clerk's canine assistant Harry remembered in Tuesday memorial race

Memorial races are not uncommon but a twist on the norm takes place at Salisbury on Tuesday when the track stages a contest commemorating clerk of the course Jeremy Martin's dog.
The Remembering 'Harry' The Racecourse Westie Handicap marks the death this year of an almost 17-year-old pet who when not walking the track with Martin spent most of his shifts at Salisbury either sleeping outside the weighing room or seeking treats from rather busier staff members.
"Harry was a great friend to me," said Martin. "So many of us in racing have dogs or cats, and they are always there for us – as loyal companions, stress relievers and givers of affection.
"Harry was a real character and was well known by many, including stewards, officials, and senior racing staff like Emthe Kuhle-Hansen from Roger Varian’s stable. I used to joke that it was easy working out the going when Harry walked the course with me. If he came back dusty it was firm and if he came back wet it was soft.
"I was very touched when my co-directors at Salisbury suggested naming a race after him. He had a fabulous, long life and for that I am very thankful."
