Ryan Moore could be in line for Expert Eye ride in the Greenham
Connections looking to get the 2,000 Guineas hope back on track at Newbury
Ryan Moore could be in line for the ride on Khalid Abdullah's Qipco 2,000 Guineas hope Expert Eye, with connections hopeful the world's best jockey will be available for Saturday's comeback in the Al Basti Equiworld Supporting Greatwood Greenham Stakes.
Expert Eye was partnered by Moore on debut but has since done his racing under Andrea Atzeni, with Moore in opposition for employers Coolmore.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, arguably responsible for last season's most impressive and most disappointing juvenile performances in Britain under Atzeni, remains a best-priced 10-1 for the 2,000 Guineas based on his four-and-a-half-length demolition job in the Vintage Stakes.
But his owner's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe admitted his Dewhurst flop – when last of nine having been sent off the 4-7 favourite – remains a concern.
"He's an intended runner," he said of Saturday's entry as one of 15 in the Newbury Group 3.
"He's done well over the winter and it's nice to get him back on track. His work has been pleasing so from that point of view we're positive. Obviously we're mindful of what happened in the Dewhurst, but he's had a straightforward preparation so we're looking forward to it."
On whether Atzeni would retain the ride he added: "Not necessarily, I think if Ryan Moore's available, and I don't know yet if he's going to be available – he may well also have other potential rides in the Guineas, so I don't know, we'll see. Nothing's been decided yet."
Moore, of course, remains most likely to be at Churchill Downs on 2,000 Guineas day, May 5, to partner Mendelssohn in the Kentucky Derby.
Grimthorpe also provided a positive bulletin on last year's Oaks, Irish Oaks, King George, Yorkshire Oaks and Arc winner Enable, and her likely comeback.
"We'll look at the Coronation Cup, that would be the more likely," he said. "Failing that the Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland would be an option."
