Godolphin's Cloth Of Stars, who had been as short as 4-1 for the Prince of Wales's Stakes next week, will not run at Royal Ascot.

The Andre Fabre-trained star was among the leading fancies for the 1m2f Group 1, the richest race of the meeting at £700,000, after completing a hat-trick in the Prix Ganay last month.

However, connections believe those early-season efforts may have left a mark.

"The horse had an excellent spring campaign and really deserved his Group 1 win," said Fabre, quoted on Godolphin's website.

"Initially he seemed to have taken it well, but I feel now that he's already peaked and is asking for a bit of time to recover. He'll be given an easy few weeks and brought back for an autumn campaign, and we'll look to stepping him back up to 12 furlongs."

Godolphin have another laeding contender for the Prince of Wales's in the John Gosden-trained Jack Hobbs, although he also has the option of the Hardwicke Stakes, while Ulysses is also prominent in the betting for Sir Michael Stoute.

Cloth Of Stars is the second high-profile French horse to be ruled out of Ascot in two days as classy stayer Vazirabad will not run in the Gold Cup.
