Impressive on his debut at Newmarket ten days previously, Calyx confirmed his class by delivering an awesome performance to land the Coventry Stakes under Frankie Dettori, for whom it would prove the first leg of a fabulous treble.

Sent off 2-1 favourite, the son of Kingman scored by a length after being sent to the front over two furlongs out.

The manner of his victory impressed everyone, not least Dettori, who said: "For a two-year-old to do what he did on only his second start says a lot about this colt. He's very exciting.

"It's always a worry when the field splits into two groups, as they did today. I was tracking the leaders on the stands' side and as they weren't going quick enough for me I had no option but to go on when I did."

Calyx was slashed for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas to as low as 4-1 favourite (from 16) by Coral, with 8-1 the biggest price in a place.

Also impressed was the Racing Post’s two-year-old handicapper Simon Turner, who said: “Calyx has been given a Racing Post Rating of 116. Only Canford Cliffs (118) has rated higher in winning the Coventry in the last 15 years and he looks a ready-made Group 1 winner.”

Trainer John Gosden said of his 44th Royal Ascot winner, whom he trains for Khalid Abdullah: "He's a horse who makes you get up in the morning.

"He's very talented. His father was exceptionally talented and this horse has all of those attributes.

"I think for a horse second time up to be left on his own with a huge crowd screaming is a big ordeal for him. It could easily have seen him getting distracted. To do what he did, going on so far out, and win as he did was a marvellous achievement. Full marks to him."

He added: "He's a bit of a show-off and I had to give him time. I'd love to give him a nice break now and then come back for the Prix Morny in August. I don't see why he's not a Guineas horse."

Martyn Meade was delighted with the performance of runner-up Advertise, who rallied to get the better of Sergei Prokofiev, the 3-1 second favourite, by a neck for second spot as the pair battled it out on the opposite side of the track to the winner.

He said: "It was a fabulous performance. He's a really good horse in the making and he'll have another day. For the type of horse he is it's a bonus to have him competing like that so early in his career.

"It's always difficult when they split like they did and the winner is on the other side of the track.

"I'm a believer in taking things slowly, so we'll have to see whether we'll go for another Group 2 or go up to Group 1. We'll see how he is at home before making plans."

Advertise, who won a maiden at Newbury on his only previous start, is entered for the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh on Irish Derby weekend and the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the same track in August.

Oisin Murphy, who rode the runner-up, said: "It was a great run. Advertise is a very good horse. I've liked him from the beginning and Martyn and his team have done a very good job with him."
