Kaeso needs Saturday York win to boost chance of sealing Royal Hunt Cup slot
Kaeso, a general 20-1 shot for next Wednesday’s Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, is set to run at York on Saturday in a bid to pick up the penalty that will get him into the famous cavalry charge.
An official mark of 96 was required to make the cut last year, and Nigel Tinkler’s prolific scorer is currently rated 3lb below that despite winning a competitive handicap at Chester at the end of last month.
Victory for Kaeso in the 7f JCB Handicap on the Knavesmire will result in a 5lb penalty, which ought to clinch his Royal Ascot place.
“I’m happy with Kaeso’s current mark, but I don’t think it will get him into the Royal Hunt Cup,” Tinkler said.
“If he wins at York he’ll pick up a 5lb penalty which should get him in. If he misses the Hunt Cup we won’t cry – there are other valuable handicaps at Ascot during the summer, although the ground will probably be like a road by then.
“Kaeso must have it wet. He's a lovely, lovely horse – a real solid fellow. Hollie Doyle has really clicked with him this season.”
Kaeso and Doyle teamed up to win last month, which was the five-year-old’s seventh success from 21 career starts, and he still appears to be improving.
