Rider hungry for more after notching maiden century

Thirteen is an unlucky number for some, but not Richard Kingscote, who on Saturday evening notched his maiden century of winners in his 13th year in the saddle.

Kingscote achieved the landmark success aboard the Ralph Beckett-trained Charismatic Man at Wolverhampton, boosting his remarkable £1 level-stake profit for the year to +£91.66.

A fall at the same racecourse in November 2014, in which Kingscote sustained a broken collarbone, right arm, wrist, elbow and punctured lung, has restricted him in terms of going for the century in recent years, but he has not held back this time around.

He said on Sunday: "I’ve got close a couple of times so I’m really pleased to have reached the milestone. I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve had, be it Tom [Dascombe], my agent Guy Jewell, the many other trainers who have given me rides and also the owners and stable staff – they've all played their part.

"Tom’s horses have been in good form and it’s a big help picking up winners from many other yards, particularly Sir Michael Stoute, Mark Johnston and Ralph Beckett."

Kingscote's level stakes profit for 2016 is extraordinary bearing in mind only one other jockey in the top 54 riders in Britain this year – Pat Cosgrave – is in the black, and he added: "I’ve had a few big-priced winners for Harry Dunlop quite recently so that always helps with the healthy profit. It always takes a couple of 20-1 winners to boost the figures!"

Continuing to ride on the all-weather during the winter, as well as a trip to Dubai to partner Dascombe's Arcanada, is on the agenda, and Kingscote is hoping Commonwealth Cup fancy Mrs Danvers may be the horse to thrust him back into the limelight next season, three years after his Irish St Leger win aboard Brown Panther.

Kingscote, 30, who has yet to ride a Group 1 winner in Britain, said: "Now Panther has gone it’s so hard to find another standout horse to contest top races. Tom has spent plenty of money at the sales again this year so hopefully there might be a star among them.

"It was great to win twice on Mrs Danvers this year, and if I keep the ride on her there will be some big days ahead. If she continues her progression she could be anything."
