The general public has the chance of a rare sneak peek behind the scenes at one of British racing's leading Flat yards on Sunday when Richard Hannon will open the doors to his successful yard.

Hannon, who was champion trainer in 2014, a year after taking over from his father Richard snr, will welcome visitors to his Herridge Racing Stables between 10am and 1pm.

Hannon said: "The open morning provides a wonderful opportunity for us to give something back to fans of racing as well as raising money for two brilliant causes.

"We are very lucky to have some wonderful facilities and everyone at Herridge Racing Stables is excited to welcome visitors to the yard. Please do come and visit."

Attractions at the open day, which is sponsored by Unibet, also include the chance to meet footballer Charlie Austin, who is involved in ownership, as well as stable jockeys Tom Marquand, Sean Levey and Rossa Ryan, plus a farrier demonstration and activities for children.

Entry costs £20 for adults and £5 for children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult with proceeds going to the Greatwood Charity, which uses retired racehorses to help disadvantaged people, and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

New awards and backing for HWPA

Two new prizes are up for grabs at this year's Horserace Writers and Photographers Association Derby Awards, which will be supported by new partners Hong Kong Jockey Club, Vertem Asset Management and Ladbrokes Coral.

The annual ceremony takes place at the Lancaster Hotel in London on December 2 and its president Marcus Townend, who works for the Daily Mail, said: "The Derby Awards have long been established in the racing calendar as an occasion when the racing media honours excellence both within its ranks and across the sport.

"To secure three prestigious supporters reflects the standing of the awards and the HWPA are extremely grateful for their backing."

The inaugural Alan Lee Trophy, which commemorates the late racing correspondent of The Times, will recognise emerging talent in print, digital or broadcasting, while the Specialist Writer Award will be open to those who produce analytical work, which could include tipping columns and writing on the bloodstock industry.

Townend added: "The HWPA committee strongly felt that there should be an award specifically for the younger members of the racing media.

"Entrants will be able to submit written pieces for print or online, blogs and podcasts or a broadcast showreel.

Howzat for a good cause?

Teams from the Nicky Henderson, Richard Hannon and Warren Greatrex yards will feature on Sunday's Retraining of Racehorses charity cricket day, which will also present the public with the chance to win a quarter share in a yearling closely related to the high-class Dutch Connection.

Staged at Wormsley Cricket Ground near High Wycombe, the competition includes eight teams from different yards in a knockout tournament to claim the trophy, while there is also a charity auction during the lunch break.

The auction includes tickets for Wimbledon and the Royal Opera House, use of a private box at Ascot catering for 14 people and a quarter share in a yearling with training expenses paid.

Di Arbuthnot, chief executive of RoR, said: "We are looking forward to what should be a memorable day. It is a remarkable setting and we, together with the players, are very fortunate to have the opportunity to use the ground at Wormsley.

"On account of the generosity and support of donors who have sponsored the catering, the wine, the trophies and the flowers, not to mention the wonderful lots in the auction and prizes in the raffle, we have the chance to raise some valuable funds for the charity, while also enjoying a great day out."
