The widest-margin winner in the biggest-smile-of-the-day race was George Materna, who achieved a 30-year ambition when You're Hired gave him a first 'Glorious' winner.

His triumphal march into the winner's enclosure was greeted by much back slapping from course luminaries, and Materna, hugging his wife Anne-Marie, said: "I am always hopeful. I have had a box here for the last few years and lots of seconds and thirds but this is the first winner.

"I have had some go very close and remember Truism being placed in two consecutive years, although he won two other races at Goodwood. I have had other winners here, but not at the festival.
