It may not be the stonewall pointer to the Champion Hurdle that punters are craving but Alan King’s Barbury Castle team had a minor confidence boost a day before Yanworth contests the Grade 1 event as the two-mile hurdler’s work partner Midnight Maestro landed the feature £15,000 2m½f handicap hurdle.

The five-year-old, similarly owned by JP McManus, is a full brother to the yard’s Randox Health County Hurdle entry William H Bonney and confirmed an initial mark of 120 was on the lenient side with a four-length victory over Brotherly Company under Wayne Hutchinson.

King said: “They’ve worked together all season and complement one another pretty well. Midnight Maestro looks a big, fine chasing prospect and he jumped those hurdles well.
