Former jockey-turned-trainer Christian Williams partnered many winners at the Somerset circuit in his riding days and saddled his first one when 18-1 chance Potters Corner made all to collect the feature 3m1f handicap chase.

The eight-year-old, who had not won since April 2016, bounced back to form to take the Lord Stalbridge Memorial Cup under an inspired front-running ride from James Bowen, staying on strongly when the question was asked up the home straight to finish two and three-quarter lengths ahead of One Of Us.

Williams, who partnered Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Denman to his first British victory at the course, said: "He's won despite wanting better ground, in my opinion, and we'll now be looking at some of the better staying handicap chases in the spring.
