New trainer Christian Williams came desperately close to landing a big pot with his very first runner, but it was not to be as Limited Reserve was collared close home in the £50,000 1m7½f handicap hurdle by the fast-finishing Stamp Your Feet.

The former jockey, promoted from his position of assistant at Dai Walters' stable in Cardiff, had targeted the £315,000 Challenger Series finals day – the climax of a scheme designed to give connections of mid-tier horses a valuable focal point – and it so nearly paid off.

"The horse has run well, so I'm really pleased and the placed prize-money isn't bad either," said Williams, who rode more than 100 winners for Paul Nicholls, three of which came on the brilliant Denman.
