A new sprinting star provided the highlight of a William Buick treble, yet the card's biggest talking point revolved around the rider's first winner and whether the Sandown stewards had been wise in neither disqualifying Well Of Wisdom nor suspending his jockey.

Thirty-five minutes before Lazuli stormed to victory in the Listed Unibet Scurry Stakes, his Charlie Appleby-trained stablemate defied a 103 rating in the 7f handicap, triggering plenty of social media debate.

Half a furlong from home the Godolphin three-year-old edged right under a left-hand drive and badly squeezed the rail-running Surf Dancer, whose partner Jason Watson was left with no room to manoeuvre, the duo eventually finishing fourth.
