Patrick Chamings could not believe just how much What A Welcome has improved this season after the four-year-old stayed on gamely to notch up his eighth win from his last nine outings.

The son of Nathaniel scored for the first time at Lingfield in November and has risen 32lb in the ratings since, with a fourth at Ascot in July the only blemish on his outstanding record this season.

“He’s impressed us beyond all belief today going over two miles for the first time,” Chamings said. “We’ve watched him all year and cannot believe how much he’s improved – he’s just unbelievable. This time last year he hadn’t even won a race.
