Saturday: Newmarket

A final trip to Newmarket as a trainer for Mick Channon ended in jubilation as his only runner on the day Caernarfon landed the Listed Montrose Fillies' Stakes.

Channon announced earlier on Saturday he was handing over the reins to his son Jack next year and he has a filly to look forward to after the juvenile came from last to first under Connor Beasley to win by half a length.

"She's improved all year. She ran a blinder up at Pontefract and confirmed today that there was no fluke about that," Channon said.

"She's got a great cruising speed. She's a nice filly and seems to be going to right way – all she has done is improve.

"Jack's going to have some nice horses next year, so I'm absolutely delighted for him. That was my last trip to Newmarket as a trainer and we got a few quid, so I'm happy about that!"

Jack Channon is keeping all his options open for next year and will see how she trains through the spring with regards to her attempting the 1,000 Guineas at this same track.

He said: "I think we'll stick to a mile to start off with and certainly have a look at something like the Guineas if we feel she's good enough. A mile and quarter could well be within her range as she goes through her three-year-old campaign."

Reflecting on the day, he added: "It's been a brilliant day. We thought she was a good filly for a while and it's just nice that she's been able to do it on Dad's last runner at Newmarket. He's happy to take the money off them. We're very happy."

Promising fillies

The two divisions of the 7f fillies' novice were won by exciting juvenile debutants. The first went to the Clive Cox-trained Karsavina, who led in the final strides, after receiving a bump on the way to the finish. The second was taken by the William Haggas-trained Orchid Bloom, who strode clear in the final furlong to win by three and a half lengths.
