A glum Wesley Ward is a rare sight on a British racecourse and, while he was nothing but magnanimous in defeat, the US trainer's disappointment after Lady Aurelia faded to third in the Cheveley Park Stakes was unmistakable.

Ward jetted to the Rowley Mile expecting his superstar filly, who lit up Royal Ascot with a sensational display of speed in June, to claim a second Group 1 prize after her Prix Morny success and maintain her perfect record.

But it was not to be, as Lady Aurelia was overhauled in the closing stages having once again scorched the turf out in front under Frankie Dettori, who had assumed the role of assistant trainer in the build-up to yesterday's race.
