Void race at Musselburgh as Squouateur suffers fatal injury in feature hurdle

Trainer Ben Haslam said it was "a very sad day all round" after Squouateur suffered a fatal injury in the Northern Lights Stayers Hurdle Qualifier at Musselburgh, which led to the race being declared void due to the stricken horse's position on the track.

The JP McManus-owned Squouateur broke down on the bend after the stands, with two hurdles jumped, and the rest of the field were unable to negotiate a safe passage on the next circuit of the 3m race.

Well before they passed the stands again, the remaining eight runners were met by a flurry of yellow flags in the straight and were safely pulled up, before heading for the exit chute.
