Ed Vaughan celebrated his first win for Phoenix Thoroughbreds when Dubai Dominion overcame Machell Place in the 7f juvenile maiden, a result that was rather ironic as the runner-up is named after the stable of the Newmarket trainer.

The equine Machell Place, trained by John Gosden, is owned by local builder Colin Murfitt, who is Vaughan's landlord at his yard on Old Station Road.

Not surprisingly there was plenty of leg-pulling in the winner's enclosure, with Murfitt joking: "I'll have to put the rent up after that result! Fair play to Ed but he's told me he's now going to get a slow one and call it Clarehaven!"
