Thornton eternally grateful as he edges nearer to milestone

Andrew Thornton received as much pleasure from his 998th career victory as he is likely to gain from his 1,000th after linking up with a long-time ally on Barton Gift.

Thornton was at his best as he carried the colours of former trainer Mercy Rimell to a hard-earned success as the John Spearing-trained nine-year-old found a second wind to spring a 28-1 surprise in the 3m5½f handicap chase.

The pair go back 25 years and have combined for some great moments, particularly with 2007 Racing Post Chase winner Simon, who was also trained by Spearing.
