'This isn't really happening!' - 80-1 Gwennie May Boy thrills first-time owners
Tuesday: Bangor
Gwennie May Boy caused a shock when scoring at odds of 80-1 in a drama-packed 2m½f novice hurdle to the delight of his first-time owner Gwendoline Clarke.
The chaos started with the well-fancied Sergeant Wilson stumbling at the first and unseating Daryl Jacob, bringing down Trick Of The Tail in the process.
Gentle River was pulled-up at the next, while Meetmelater and King Of The Hill also failed to make it home.
The Jonjo O'Neill-trained Gwennie May Boy travelled smoothly throughout the race before being produced to lead at the second-last by Kevin Brogan.
He kept on well to score by seven and a half lengths from 40-1 shot Iron D'Ex for his ecstatic connections, with Clarke describing the win as "marvellous" to Sky Sports Racing.
Her daughter added: "Mum turned 80 during lockdown and we just thought when we came out of lockdown, if we managed to survive Covid, we were going to buy our first horse.
"We decided to just grab life by the throat and go for it. We’ve never experienced anything like it. We’re going to wake up in a minute, this isn’t really happening!”
Game performance
Arizona Cardinal, trained by Stuart Edmunds, repelled the late challenge of Mucho Mas in a thrilling finish to take the 2m4½f novice handicap chase by a neck under Ciaran Gethings.
Edmunds said: "We’re very pleased. He jumped well all the way around. I think it was a nice performance."
