'This is too good to be true' - amateur partners first winner
Wednesday: Wolverhampton
Jockey Oscar Palmer has ambitions to be "the next Harry Cobden" and he got a significant milestone out of the way by partnering his first winner in the opening 2m½f amateur jockeys' handicap on Frame Rate for Somerset trainer Carroll Gray.
Palmer, 20, has an excellent grounding for success as he spent summer holidays with Richard Hannon and has worked for Andrew Balding for two years.
"I couldn't believe it to be honest," he said. "I thought someone would be closing on me. I thought 'this is too good to be true'. It was a massive relief.
"I had it in my head I wasn't going to be able to beat the favourite and had written it off that we were going to finish second."
Watch Oscar Palmer land his first winner
After becoming too heavy for the Flat, the rider is now based in Alhampton, a mile from Paul Nicholls' Ditcheat stable in Somerset, at Will Biddick's breaking and pre-training yard and is eyeing a career over jumps.
Palmer is spending his time educating some of Nicholls' young horses and dreams of following in the footsteps of the Ditcheat's leading jockey.
"I would love to go conditional in a few years' time," he said. "I want to start pointing and figure out the jumping game and then, when I have some more experience, to go to a big jumping yard. The dream is to be a Harry Cobden one day!"
Doyle at the double
Only David Probert has ridden more winners this year than Hollie Doyle, who had a double on Najeeba for Harry and Roger Charlton, and Fearless Bay for Ed Dunlop.
