The sport needs more money - but more than anything it needs horses like Baaeed
For Baaeed and British Flat racing, the best is yet to come. That's the hope, although British racing's future growth will take a fair bit longer and involve many more committees. For Baaeed to get better, he need only continue doing what he does now, albeit over a slightly longer trip.
Ultimately, the future of Flat racing in most nations depends on horses like Baaeed, equine athletes whose extraordinary talent leaves us gasping for breath or making the sort of stirring noise that went up from Goodwood's grandstands when he swept to the front in the Sussex Stakes.
A literal reading of the form would suggest what we witnessed on the Downs was a performance a little shy of earth shattering. The form might say that, but the manner, style and flair of Baaeed's tour de force still sent a rush of excitement coursing through the veins. It sent something similar through Jim Crowley as well, but he was sensibly thinking about what comes next in the Juddmonte International. We should all spend plenty of time thinking about it between now and race time on Wednesday, August 17.
