'The horse tries as hard as I have' - Dascombe delighted with grafter Misty Grey
Sunday: Chelmsford
Tom Dascombe welcomed his first success from his new base at Lambourn on Thursday and wasted no time in recording his second after stable favourite Misty Grey landed the feature handicap.
The five-year-old thrived on his first return to six furlongs since November to finish clear of Strong Power under Richard Kingscote.
"The horse tries as hard as I have done. He's a grafter and never ever shirks the issue. I love him – I'd marry him," he joked.
"He just wants to get past the horse in front. When you've got that in a horse, you can't ask for any more. I'm so lucky Barbara and Alick Richmond decided to send him to me and have stuck with me."
Chelmsford's feature handicap offered prize-money of £50,000 and Dascombe was full of praise for the track's Sunday meeting card.
"There's so many tracks that should take a good look at themselves because Chelmsford put on proper prize-money for proper horses," he said.
"It really does need addressing. I couldn't run a horse at Newbury recently because the prize-money was bad. If you can't offer people something to race for, why would you have a horse in this country?"
Last-minute magic
Connor Planas made the most of a last-minute call up on Rogue Missile as the pair managed to hold on by a nose in the novice stakes.
The 18-year-old apprentice replaced Jack Mitchell to score for Tom Clover and owners The Rogues Gallery, who field Nassau hope Rogue Millennium on Thursday.
