Members of Parliament have been struggling to find a solution to the marathon Brexit saga but one of them appears certain he has found the solution to the Randox Health Grand National.

On Wednesday evening racing devotee Sir Nicholas Soames rose in the House of Commons to tip defending champion and clear favourite Tiger Roll, thus providing a rare and welcome note of levity to the European Union (Withdrawal) (No 5) Bill debate.

Addressing deputy speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Soames said: "On a point of order, Sir Lindsay, in the spirit of the new regime of bringing the whole House together on these difficult matters, and while you are waiting to get these amendments circulated, I thought it would be helpful if I was to let the House know that the Grand National will be won by a horse called Tiger Roll."
