'That one meant a lot' - day to remember as Philip Armson rides first double
Friday: Bangor
Conditional Philip Armson showcased his talents in the saddle by riding a double, including a first for his boss David Pipe aboard Paricolor in the 2m7f handicap hurdle.
Armson had ridden the five-year-old on his last two starts, finishing runner-up on both occasions. The pair ensured that would not be the case this time by making all and staying on strongly to run out a six-and-a-half length winner.
“What a day, that one meant a lot,” the winning rider told Sky Sports Racing. “It’s my first double and first winner for the boss since I started at Pond House.
“He was my first ride at Cheltenham and he gave me a fantastic spin to finish second, but it all worked out today. He’s got gears and it’s lovely to get on a horse like him.
“He bring so much joy and I would like to thank the owners for being very loyal to me.”
Armson had earlier struck on Kingston King in the 2m1½f handicap chase, giving trainer David Rees his 100th career winner.
Rees said: “We picked him for his 7lb claim because the horse needed as much help as we could give him. He didn't ride like a 7lb claimer today, he gave it a peach of a ride and it was well deserved for him and the horse."
Rees, who started training 15 years ago, added of his landmark achievement: “It’s fantastic for a small yard like us, I only have six horses in training. I’m over the moon for all the staff and owners involved.”
Scholfield at the double
Nick Scholfield landed a double of his own, taking the feature 3m handicap chase on the Alan King-trained Major Dundee and then closing the card on Rockinastorm, who routed his rivals by 18 lengths in the bumper for trainer Henry Daly.
