Federico Tesio had his piece of wood, Bjorn Nielsen has his. Tesio's - the winning post at Epsom - has stood the test of time, Nielsen's has some way to go, but you wouldn't bet against its longevity after Tuesday's Goodwood Cup, which was popular with colour-writers across the land if not with racegoers.

Stradivarius took almost three and a half minutes to cover the two miles across the rolling Sussex Downs, but it didn't take that long to prompt musings about whether he was more valuable than the violins that share his name.

The homebred son of Sea The Stars earned £296,593 for his spoilsport defeat of Everyone's Favourite Flat Horse, but the musical instruments crafted by his namesake Antonio Stradivari have been sold at auction for $3.6 million. There's plenty of time for a bidding war, mind.
