Sprinting is the key as Ancient Times strikes over the minimum trip

Friday: Doncaster

Harry Eustace admitted to running Ancient Times over the wrong trip, but got it spot on today as the drop back to 5f saw him return to winning ways.

The four-year-old hadn’t run over the minimum trip since joining Eustace from Kevin Ryan’s yard this time last year, but showed he had the speed to score under a bold, front-running ride from Hayley Turner.

Eustace said: “I thought he might be a bit ring-rusty today but he certainly wasn’t. Last year was educational for him really. I actually managed to run him over seven [furlongs], which is clearly a massive mistake.

“Six furlongs was nice because it allowed him to travel really well but he always actually looked like five would be the optimum.”

Eustace took over the training reins from his father only last year, but hit the ground running by notching up a double-digit haul and is looking forward to the season ahead.

“It’s gone great,” he added “We’ve deliberately taken a slow start this year. This is only our third runner on the grass, so to have a winner this early is great and I think we have a nice team to take us through the season.”

Professional performance

After making his debut earlier this month at Wolverhampton, Lethal Nymph made it two wins from two in a professional manner. The Clive Cox-trained three-year-old had too much for first-time-out winner Rizg from the Roger Varian yard, hitting the front, then holding on under Adam Kirby by half a length.
