Spark Plug and jockey Jimmy Fortune, whose 2015 Royal Hunt Cup challenge ended with the horse on the deck and his rider in hospital with broken vertebrae, enjoyed far better luck when they combined to land the 2016 Betfred Cambridgeshire.

They added much-needed lustre to one of Manton trainer Brian Meehan's lowest-scoring seasons when storming up the stands' rail to win the traditionally tricky first leg of the autumn double going away from the rest.

They thwarted the Saeed Bin Suroor pair of Carry On Deryck and Very Talented, with last year's winner Third Time Lucky fourth.
