'What a day' - Sophie Leech lands stunning 432-1 double

Trainer Sophie Leech landed a 432½-1 double, scoring with both of her runners on the card.
Mount Tempest weathered the rainy conditions to spring a shock in the day’s most valuable race. The 50-1 outsider travelled far better than his odds suggested and, under Brian Hughes, jumped the last in front and was always doing enough to beat Arclight by a length.
The eight-year-old joined Leech from Dan Skelton’s yard in July and had raced twice in France for his new stable, finishing eighth at Clairefontaine before being pulled up at Dieppe next time.
Leech said: “I was devastated after his last run in France because his first was quite promising, and then he just went backwards. When we got him home we changed a few things, and I knew he was in really good form. I didn’t expect him to win, I just thought he’d run well.
“Going forward he has plenty of options, and he’s fairly versatile trip-wise.”
Stiletto completed the double in the 2m7f novice handicap hurdle, having also joined the Leech team this year.
She added: “It was Christian [Leech] who was adamant he should go back up in distance. He was able to travel strongly and stay on well. He’s a really fun, little horse. Hopefully this will kickstart the autumn campaign.
“What a day, it’s been great and much needed."
Stiletto's win brought up a treble for jockey Sean Bowen, who also struck on Caelan and Mr McLoughlan in both divisions of the 2m novice hurdle.
