Pettochside let his owners’ granddaughter, Katie, plait his tail before racing. A softie at home, he’s tough on the track though.

The nine-year-old proved it again by winning at Goodwood for the fifth time in 14 tries, the 11th occasion he has finished in the first three on his beloved strip of South Downs.

But the win was a shock to trainer John Bridger, who cannot fathom how his veteran sprinter keeps improving.
