Conditional jockey Fern O’Brien celebrated the first double of her career with both winners trained by her father, Fergal.

First, Kingston Sunflower won the 2m handicap hurdle on her first start over jumps in 702 days.

Owned by MP Rupert Lowe, the mare, who had a prep on the Flat last month, registered her fourth success when pulling clear of favourite Sergeant Fury to win by six lengths. Her three previous victories over hurdles came in October 2022.

Fergal O’Brien said: “She’s not a very straightforward mare, but Fern made her look very straightforward. She gave her a great ride, the mare is strong and very keen.

The pair completed the double with Snatch A Glance in the concluding bumper. The success was extra special as the five-year-old was bred by Fergal O'Brien's assistant trainer and partner Sally Randell.

“I think that win will tee him up nicely for a novice hurdle. He’s jumped plenty at home and loves being a racehorse.

"Sally has brought him along lovely from being born to winning today and she deserves that.

“It’s lovely for Fern to ride her first double too. She’s a very hard worker and very capable.”

Unusual double

Sam Twiston-Davies and James Owen combined for a double despite only having to compete in one of the races.

The opening 2m5f novice hurdle was a walkover for Percy Shelley after the only other declared runner, Maldini Milano, was withdrawn.

Twiston-Davies then partnered Kate O’Riley to victory in the 2m fillies’ maiden hurdle.
