Scottish National the aim after Grozni gives Sandy Thomson a sixth Borders National victory

Grozni gave trainer Sandy Thomson his sixth victory in the Borders National when causing a 22-1 shock to leave winning connections targeting another crack at the Scottish equivalent at Ayr in April.

Dan Skelton's well-backed 7-2 shot Diamond Dealer opened up a healthy lead under in-form rider Tristan Durrell, but his advantage began to shrink and he was headed after the third-last before being quickly pulled up.

Grozni, who had been close up throughout, moved into the lead at the second-last and, despite jumping right at the final two fences, Brian Hughes steered him to a three-length victory over Breeze Of Wind.

The nine-year-old finished fourth in the Scottish National on his final outing for James Owen in April, and his new owners are hoping he can go for the same race again.

Joint-owner Jimmy Fyffe told ITV: “I was watching him the whole way and Brian was travelling so well. There were about three or four fences to go, and I wanted to say he was cruising. It was just unbelievable. We had planned for this race when we bought him and gave him a couple of runs to get him ready. It's brilliant.

"We paid £25,000 for him and my friend Scott Townshend bought a share. I was aiming Grozni at the Scottish National, so we’ll stall him for that.”

Super Segal

Saint Segal made the more than 800-mile round trip worthwhile for trainer Jane Williams when winning the 2m1f handicap chase.

The seven-year-old, who had travelled from Williams’ yard in Devon, was last seen finishing second in the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup and went one better when comfortably making all to score by five and a half lengths under Ciaran Gethings.
