Scottish National on the agenda for game Grimthorpe winner Undersupervision

Saturday: Doncaster

Undersupervision's novice chase campaign has not been without incident and his rider Sam Twiston-Davies had to come through a stewards' inquiry before a first win over fences could be confirmed in the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase.

Undersupervision, who crashed through a railing up the Cheltenham run-in when giving Does He Know a race back in October, drifted into the path of Mister Malarky and Harry Bannister after the final fence here, but the winning margin of a length and three-quarters was deemed to be more than the momentum lost by Richard Bandey's stable debutant in second.

"He's won by far enough, although I will admit to poor riding on my behalf," said Twiston-Davies, who received a three-day ban for careless riding, when speaking to Sky Sports Racing.

"It's quite easy just to pull your stick through, but it's a Grimthorpe, you just want to win. It's a prestigious race so it's great for Jamie and Anne-Marie [Shepperd, owners] and all the team."

Despite holding Cheltenham Festival entries for the Ultima and Kim Muir, Twiston-Davies said: "He's entered but he won't go. It was all about today. He's been running in some really good races, this being one as well, but it's nice to have got his head in front."

The Scottish Grand National on April 2, a race winning trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies has won three times, could be next on the agenda, with Jamie Shepperd saying: "He's only a novice so he's got a long future ahead of him. When we spoke to Nigel about it he was definitely looking at the Scottish National. He should have a reasonable weight so we're really optimistic he's got another big race in him."

The Twiston-Davies team sealed a good day's work when Spring Meadow got off the mark in the closing bumper under Sam to complete a double.

Momentous moment for Menzies

Rebecca Menzies sealed a career-best jumps season in style as Fonzerelli sprung a shock in the Listed 3m½f mares' novice hurdle under Nathan Moscrop.

The 18-1 shot won for the first time under rules only last Saturday at Newcastle and was stepping up in trip and class from that breakthrough success.

However, Menzies explained that the half-length victory was not completely unforeseen.

She said: "It might have looked absolutely mad on paper what we were doing, running her after winning an average novice at Newcastle last Saturday, but we thought it was worth taking our chance in the hope that we got some black type and obviously she's gone and exceeded our expectations and won well."

It was a 27th winner of the season over jumps for the Durham-based trainer, surpassing last season's best tally of 26, and she added: "It's both of our [Moscrop's] biggest jumps wins. We'll definitely celebrate these good days, we've been lucky this year that we've had so many of them."
