Sam defies the odds to score for Tizzard after undergoing wind operation

Not surprisingly, Flo’Sboy Sam was sent off an unconsidered 40-1 chance in the 2m5½f handicap hurdle as he boasted more letters than figures against his name, but the Colin Tizzard-trained five-year-old belied those big odds with an emphatic victory.

Since he last ran 36 days ago, he has undergone wind surgery and the procedure obviously had the desired effect as he readily came home four-and-a-half lengths to the good over The Black Squirrel after hitting the front three out.

Tizzard was as surprised as anyone about the horse’s success and said: “He refused to race at Taunton back in March and then pulled up at halfway at this track last month. He had his wind tinkered with and a bit of time off.
