Salateen sneaks it in thrilling three-way finish
So often Listed races are muddling, small-field and relatively predictable affairs, but not the £50,000 Sunbets-sponsored Lady Wulfruna Stakes. It was a thriller, with Salateen overcoming his high draw when scraping home in a three-way photo.
Ridden by Phillip Makin for Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah and trainer David O'Meara, the five-year-old had already enjoyed one big pay day this winter having won at Meydan last month, but he finished last on his other two starts out there.
He was sent off at 25-1 for his all-weather debut but those odds proved generous, for despite being drawn 12 of 12 he broke well, soon led, turned for home with a clear lead and then held on by the skin of his teeth to beat the strong-finishing favourite Keystroke by a nose, with Yuften just a short head back in third.
