It may have looked like an underwhelming contest on paper, but the match race between March Law and Summa Peto proved a brilliant spectacle at Ayr on Monday.

The former was sent off a 2-9 chance having finished a promising second to 2021 Qipco 2,000 Guineas ante-post favourite Battleground in the Chesham Stakes.

The Mark Johnston-trained juvenile raced in front under Joe Fanning and moved powerfully, but as he tried to kick clear, Keith Dalgleish's runner was sure not to make it easy and quickened to move upsides.
