One witty racegoer summed it up perfectly: "That is the best recovery I have seen since Liverpool came back from three nil down to rob the Champions League."

He was, of course, talking about Jody McGarvey's remarkable recovery on Great Field in the 2m1f novice chase. The 15-8 favourite seemed to jump the final fence perfectly but knuckled on landing and had a taste of the turf. Gravity looked sure to take over and send the rider out the side door. Not so.

McGarvey was having none of it. He managed to get one of his feet back into an iron and was still eight lengths in front of Don't Touch It at the line. It was a dazzling display from both horse and rider, but what did the man himself make of it all?
