Redemption for 'electric' Notable Speech in Breeders' Cup Mile - and Charlie Appleby says he'll be back for more next season

Notable Speech is set to remain in training next year following his dazzling victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile on Saturday evening. 

The four-year-old claimed an emphatic fourth Group 1 success under William Buick with a stylish turn of foot at Del Mar, gaining redemption for his third-place finish in the contest 12 months ago by rocketing down the rail under William Buick to score by a length and a half. 

Charlie Appleby quickly confirmed after the favourite's triumph that the Classic-winning colt would stay in training as a five-year-old and will form part of a potent older team of horses at Moulton Paddocks alongside Rebel's Romance, with the Turf runner-up also due to return next season. 

"He's got that electric turn of foot," Appleby told NBC. "He's tailor-made for this track and the experience at Woodbine has been the making of him coming into a race like today.

"Will's ride there was copybook, if you could've written a script on how to go round there, that was it. 

"I was confident [watching the race], I knew people would be praying for the cutaway but the longer we could sit on the rail the better because no-one's got a turn of foot like him."

Notable Speech was Godolphin's sole winner at this year's Breeders' Cup meeting, with the operation's chief hope Sovereignty ruled out earlier in the week, but he maintained Appleby's excellent record in the Mile, marking the trainer's fourth success in five years following wins by Space Blues, Modern Games and Master Of The Seas. 

It was also back-to-back Group 1 wins for the Dubawi colt, who claimed his first success in more than a year when landing the Woodbine Mile in September before his return to California for this £832,000 contest.

US challenger The Formidable Man stormed home to claim second ahead of The Lion In Winter, who failed to provide Aidan O'Brien with another victory at the meeting following the success of Gstaad on Friday.

The race also marked the final Breeders' Cup appearance for Frankie Dettori, who announced on Wednesday he would quit racing in the US after his rides at Del Mar. 

Dettori finished fast to take sixth on Japanese runner Argine after turning in at the rear of the field. The jockey won 15 Breeders’ Cup races in total, the first coming in this race on Barathea in 1994.

The 54-year-old rider will have one final riding stint in South America before concluding his career in the Chilean Derby in February, after which he is set to become the global brand ambassador to Amo Racing.

He said: "I'm trying to take it all in. I've had a great time and I'm just going to enjoy my last one. It's always sad when it comes to an end, but I think this is the right time."
