There were plenty of open mouths among the Ascot Racing Club winning owners after their Headway produced an amazing performance to win the 32Red Spring Cup.

Even winning rider James Doyle, who knows a classy three-year-old in his time with Khalid Abdullah and Godolphin, was moved to say: "I haven't ridden many horses that have come up the straight that quick."

Sectionals proved his point as the William Haggas-trained colt, who ran in the top two-year-old races that are the Coventry, Richmond and Gimcrack, produced an 10.8sec second-last furlong to turn what looked an insurmountable gap to leader Rufus King into an ultimately ears-pricked win by a length.
