Martin Hess got 9-1 about Sussex Ranger on Christmas Eve so was entitled to feel pleased when the horse he part owns struck at a fraction of those odds.

Sussex Ranger had been beaten a combined 225 lengths in his previous three runs but was supported into 7-2 favourite for the extended 2m1f handicap hurdle.

The four-year-old led throughout under Jamie Moore, who jumped off the horse and then headed off with Hess to watch Brighton take on Arsenal in the tea-time Boxing Day encounter along the coast.
