Here Comes When's surprise success in the Qatar Sussex Stakes represents a return to his very best form, with the seven-year-old landing an unlikely Group 1 success with a Racing Post Rating of 119.

The winner has an excellent record on soft ground – his two biggest success at Group 2 level in 2014 had also been achieved in testing conditions – and the deteriorating conditions clearly played a big part in this success.

In Churchill's absence Ribchester was the clear form pick for the Sussex and could be considered unfortunate not to have landed his Group 1 hat-trick, rallying late after looking held when short of room a furlong out. An RPR of 118+ rates 7lb below his best, with Lightning Spear finishing three lengths closer here than when chasing Ribchester home in the Lockinge and further underlining a below-par performance.
