'Ponies are a bit expensive' - Moore family in full force at favourite course

Monday: Plumpton

Jamie Moore started the day watching on with pride as his daughter Roxy rode in the Shetland Pony Derby, before showing her exactly how it is done with a gutsy double.

Roxy partnered Hamptons Gris Lightening in the 11-runner furlong sprint – won by Paul Nicholls' daughter Zara – and Moore was quick to point out Roxy's eagerness to race came as a bit of a surprise.

"She threw a curve ball at us by wanting to do it, they [his daughters] love their show jumping, but to be honest I don't want my girls going into jump racing," Moore said.

"But she thoroughly enjoys it and all the team that put it together do a brilliant job. Ponies are just a little bit expensive!"

Moore was forced to work hard to get Mark Of Gold a third win over course and distance in the 2m handicap hurdle following an unlikely success on Ozzie Man, who got up on the run-in to win by a neck in the 2m3½f handicap chase, both for his father Gary.

On Ozzie Man, the jockey said: "He jumped well pretty much all the way round, just two out there was no stride. I've ridden the second [Who Is That] before and he always goes off in front, so I wanted to challenge him late anyway – obviously not that late.

"A good jump at the last got me out of jail but if he'd winged it two out I might have won by maybe a length or a length and a half. That will be his minimum trip and he probably wants quicker ground, so hopefully he can go in again."

Top team unite

Fresh from picking up their Jeffrey Peate Challenge awards for being top trainer and jockey at the track last season, Chris Gordon and Tom Cannon reunited to land the feature 2m3½f handicap chase with Pasvolsky.

A winner at the track in December, the seven-year-old jumped boldly in front and, following a duel with Fairway Freddy over the final four fences, stayed on strongly to win by three and a quarter lengths.

Gordon said: "He's just really good fun, he's owned by a syndicate of ten and gives them an awful lot of pleasure.

"As a trainer, if you go and win one a season then you feel like you've done your job, but we've got a long way to the end of the campaign, so I hope he goes and picks up one or two more wins."

Gordon also expressed a desire for more horses to have taken their chances on the day after just three competed in the feature contest and a total of 36 runners lined up on the card – producing an average field of just over five across the seven races.

"It's a shame today as they have produced the most wonderful ground and very few runners have come," Gordon said. "It's a lovely day of racing with good prize-money, so it's disappointing that there aren't a few more here to participate."
