Way Back Then confirmed himself a horse with a bright future when overcoming a 350-day absence in what looked a competitive 2m5f novice hurdle. If all goes well, connections see him as a possible Cheltenham contender and he will be campaigned accordingly.

A blunder two out did not help the cause of three-quarter-length runner-up Secret Investor, who was his main market rival, but winning trainer Ben Pauling is sure Way Back Then could have found more. He is sweet on the 9-2 winner, and so is jockey Daryl Jacob.

The trainer said: "We like him at home and it's good to see him do it on the track. We'll campaign him like a nice horse and I'd like to think he'll be featuring in some decent races come the spring. We love him. He's one for the future."
