Considering Willie Mullins had sent Douvan and Un De Sceaux to win the last two runnings of the Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase, it was safe to assume the champion trainer felt Great Field had the ability to follow in those distinguished hoofprints.

The flamboyant jumper had yet to be punished for the odd jumping flaw before this race, but he paid the price at the second fence for slightly overjumping and landing awkwardly. Cue rider Jody McGarvey slamming his helmet into the ground in frustration.

Such occurrences can lead to unsatisfactory outcomes, but such was the authority with which Castlegrace Paddy took up the mantle that you felt Great Field would have to have been at his very best to see him off.
