Owner Luff cheers home Ebony Gale to hurdling win from Florida

The silks of 1986 Grand National hero West Tip were seen in the winner’s enclosure from close quarters and afar, with modern-day technology enabling owner Judith Luff to watch Ebony Gale receive plentiful applause after victory in the 2m maiden hurdle.

Luff, whose late husband Peter owned the Richard Dunwoody-ridden National winner, made a Facetime call from Florida to her representatives at the course after the son of Shirocco scored for the first time over hurdles.

Ebony Gale, trained by Philip Hobbs, had fallen on his previous two hurdle starts but the four-year-old warmed to the task and stayed on strongly to defeat stablemate Precious Bounty by a neck.
