No need for Johnston on a delightful day with racing's grassiest of grassroots
Mark Johnston mops up the first three races at Musselburgh but he wins races all the time and is bound to get loads of coverage over the coming months, so let's go to the Spooners and West Dartmoor point-to-point fixture instead.
The eight-race card heralds the resumption of pointing in the Devon and Cornwall area. Sadly, we cannot be there in person, but thanks to a live stream being provided for £10 (plus a £1.37 administration fee), all the action can be enjoyed from home. Johnston, who must get bored continually winning races and breaking records, may well be watching the stream himself.
On the final Saturday before the biggest event in the racing calendar there is something rather comforting about connecting with the sport at its grassiest of grassroots. Prize-money for the Randox Grand National has been impacted by the coronavirus but the successful connections will still receive £375,000. The winner of the opening maiden at Cherrybrook racecourse – or the farmers' fields that when combined make up the racecourse – will collect just £150.
