An apprenticeship in a Glasgow shipyard and a foray into racehorse ownership did not work out too badly for Sir Alex Ferguson, and the same could apply to Jimmy Long, even if the horse his raid on Berkshire centred on failed to fire.

The Tartan Spartan, a Listed winner in Down Royal's most important Flat race last month, was well fancied to make a splash in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes but got stuck in the mud behind St Leger-bound Defoe.
