It's no consolation for Goshen backers but there have been other famous fallers
Goshen's fate at the last in the JCB Triumph Hurdle brought back memories of some other infamous fallers at the last with the race at their mercy during a Cheltenham festival this millennium. All three were trained by Willie Mullins, so perhaps he was due a change of fortune.
Adamant Approach
Supreme Novices' Hurdle 2002
Unlike the other two fallers, Adamant Approach had travelled strongly under Ruby Walsh to take a narrow lead over the gambled JP McManus 7-4 favourite Like-A-Butterfly when falling at the last. He left Like-A-Butterfly to hold off Westender.
Annie Power
Mares' Hurdle 2015
Perhaps the most famous exit at the last in festival history because of all that was riding on it. Willie Mullins had won the first three races with Douvan, Un De Sceaux and Faugheen on the opening day. Bookmakers estimated at the time that the mare's fall cost punters £50m. The 1-2 chance had cleared away by four lengths when flattening the last to leave stablemate Glens Melody to grab the glory. Salt was rubbed into the wound when Annie Power came back the following year to win the Champion Hurdle.
Benie Des Dieux
Mares' Hurdle 2019
Almost a carbon copy of Annie Power's exit as Benie Des Dieux had powered clear going to the last with the race at her mercy under Ruby Walsh, wearing the same Susannah Ricci colours on the odds-on chance. Again the last hurdle got in the way to leave Roksana the fortunate winner.
