A fresh-faced former jockey took out his trainer’s licence 26 years ago with just a handful of horses in his care – his name was Paul Nicholls.

While much water has flowed under the proverbial bridge since, Nicholls marked the anniversary with his 2,823rd career winner after Challico overcame a tendency to lug left in the closing stages of the 2m3f novice hurdle to narrowly deny Rasasee.

The ten-time champion trainer said: “It all seems a long time ago now, but it’s astounding how everything has gone from such humble beginnings to where we are now and all the big horses that the yard has sent out since November 1, 1991.
